40 per cent of Lebanese schoolchildren displaced by Israeli attacks: Report
Around 40 per cent of Lebanon’s 1.25 million schoolchildren have been displaced by ongoing Israeli airstrikes, according to Imad Achkar, the director general of education.
“There are 1.25 million pupils in Lebanese schools,” Achkar said, noting that “40 per cent of them have been displaced” due to the Israeli bombardment.
UN officials reported on Friday that most of Lebanon's nearly 900 shelters were full, forcing many people fleeing Israeli strikes to sleep outdoors, either in the streets or public parks.
Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister, Najib Mikati, stated that 1.2 million people—out of the country’s 2022 population of 5.49 million—have been displaced by the intensifying Israeli attacks.
The Lebanese government announced earlier today that the start of the academic year would be postponed to 4 November due to "security risks."
