Top UK diplomat warns of 'catastrophic' regional escalation
27 October 2024 18:44 GMT
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy says he held separate phone calls with his Israeli and Iranian counterparts on Sunday to urge them to avoid what could become a "catastrophic" regional war after Israel's strikes on Iran.
The comments follow UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's assertion that Israel has a right to defend itself, but that Iran must not respond.
Today I held important calls with Israeli FM @Israel_Katz and Iranian FM @araghchi.
