After Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for an arms embargo on Israel as “a disgrace”, the Elysee emphasised that Macron “supports Israel’s security and demonstrates it”.

Macron’s office pointed out that France mobilised its military during Iran’s missile attacks this week, as it did in April.

The statement also mentioned that Macron “personally told the Iranian president of France’s commitment to Israel’s security,” adding that France would not tolerate attacks on Israel by Iran or its proxies.

“It is in this context that the president calls for an end to arms exports intended for use in Gaza,” the statement continued. “We must return to diplomatic solutions.”

“France is Israel’s steadfast friend,” the Elysee concluded, stating that Netanyahu’s remarks are “excessive and unrelated to the friendship between France and Israel.”

Hussein Khasib lives in constant fear, knowing he and his family could be next.

Over the past year, while much of the world's attention has been focused on the war on Gaza, several residents of Umm Safa - a picturesque village just 12km north of Ramallah - have been driven from their homes by armed settlers, often aided by the Israeli army.

Settler violence is not a new phenomenon in the occupied West Bank, where large swathes of territory are under Israeli civil and military control.

But since the war on Gaza erupted, land seizures and violent attacks aimed at forcing Palestinians to abandon their homes have spiked. The attacks have coincided with sweeping movement restrictions that have seen Palestinians denied access to cities, towns and villages.

In recent months, the settlers - emboldened by the election of far-right figures from the settlement movement - began levelling the al-Shami and Ras mountains near Umm Safa, with the aim of turning the area into a settlement outpost.

In a radio interview on Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron called for an end to arms deliveries to Israel the Israeli paper Haaretz.

Later that evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded in a recorded statement, saying, "shame on them," referring to Macron and other leaders advocating for an arms embargo on Israel.

"What a disgrace. Israel will win with or without their support," Netanyahu added.

Macron stated on the radio station France Inter, "It is a priority to return to a political solution and to stop arms deliveries for the fighting in the Gaza Strip." He emphasized that France will not supply any weapons.

Macron expressed disappointment that, despite all diplomatic efforts for a cease-fire, particularly with Israel, the conflict remains unresolved.

"I think we are not being heard, and I consider it a mistake, also for Israel's security," Macron emphasized. He noted that public opinion in France, and even more so in the region, reflects growing resentment and hatred.

However, France will continue to provide defense equipment to Israel, primarily for missile defense, according to a report from French television station BFMTV, citing the presidential palace after the interview

The president of Ireland has strongly criticized Israel’s request for UN peacekeepers to vacate their positions in southern Lebanon.

“It is outrageous that the Israel Defense Forces have threatened this peacekeeping force and sought to have them evacuate the villages they are defending,” President Michael Higgins stated.

“Indeed, Israel is demanding that the entire Unifil (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon), operating under UN mandates, walk away.”

Ireland contributes 347 soldiers to the 10,000 personnel serving in Unifil, tasked with maintaining peace in southern Lebanon.

Earlier today, Unifil announced that it had rejected Israeli demands to “relocate” some of its positions in anticipation of Israeli ground operations against the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah.

Higgins described the demand as “an insult to the most important global institution.”
