After sunset, Sudan's protesters take to the streets
For 50 days, Sudanese protesters have occupied one of the most important areas of central Khartoum outside the country's military headquarters. Day and night, they have blocked off the area to demand that the country's military rulers hand power to civilians (MEE/Kaamil Ahmed)
The protest is protected by a collection of makeshift barricades built around the sit-in's edges, constantly guarded by enthusiastic volunteers to make sure military vehicles cannot enter the site to break up the sit-in (MEE/Kaamil Ahmed)
Thousands sleep through the night at the sit-in. Some demonstrators almost never leave the site, fearing that the military might try to clear it to end the stand-off that has forced negotiations for a handover of power to civilians (MEE/Kaamil Ahmed)
'Lift your hands up high, the search will be polite,' the guards at the barricades chant as other protesters approach. Everyone is searched for weapons before entering the sit-in (MEE/Kaamil Ahmed)
Tens of thousands pour into the sit-in every night to join the protests. Some march up and down in front of the military headquarters, while others chant in spontaneous bursts or simply meet friends, seeing their presence at the sit-in as a protest in and of itself (MEE/Kaamil Ahmed)
A Sudanese woman leads the chants as hundreds of protesters from her neighbourhood of Bahri, in northern Khartoum, march into the sit-in before midnight (MEE/Kaamil Ahmed)
Protesters mock the lack of media coverage of the protests by creating fake television cameras from cardboard boxes and giving mock interviews in front of large crowds (MEE/Kaamil Ahmed)
While some parts of the protest site provide entertainment, there are quieter corners where people read the Quran or perform special nightly prayers during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan (MEE/Kaamil Ahmed)
