Anti-Sisi protests held as Sisi sworn in as President

Demonstrators protesting against the inauguration of Abdel Fatah El-Sisi as Egypt’s new president formed a human chain in the Egyptian governorate of Sharqiya on 8 June as world leaders gathered in Cairo to welcome the former minister of defence into office.

Protestors are calling for a rejection of the results of the presidential elections on the basis of illegitimacy. Some groups are demanding the return of former elected president Morsi to office.

Youth, student and opposition groups held organised nation-wide demonstrations in several governorates a day before Sis's inauguration on 7 June. Tens of protests took place in towns and villages across Dakahlia, Cairo, Luxor, Alexandria and Port Said.

Anger continues to boil across Egypt, particularly among Morsi supporters who consider Sisi's accession to the presidency as part of the "military coup" against Morsi.

They are expected to stage a series of protests throughout the first day of the new president’s term in Cairo and other cities nationwide.

The Interior Ministry has, however, warned against "any attempt to spoil the joy of Egyptians."
