An Israeli raid on Syrian-controlled territory in the Golan Heights killed at least five people on Friday, Syrian state television reported, describing the victims as unarmed civilians.

State TV said  a car was hit in a village near Qunaitra on the border, but gave no further details.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group, said the strike killed two pro-government militiamen travelling in a car.

An Israeli defence official said the strike killed at least four Palestinians responsible for rocket fire on Thursday on an Israeli village, which was hit by four rockets from Syria. No casualties were reported. While no group has so far taken responsibility, Israel has blamed Islamic Jihad for the attack.

Israel's Maariv newspaper said that the five men reported killed in Friday's attack were all believed to be members of Islamic Jihad.

The strike came a day after Israel carried out a string of raids on Syrian positions in the Golan Heights. According to reports, at least one person was killed.
