The battle for Iraq's future rages on, two months after militants led by the Islamic State (IS) took over large swathes of the country.

Sunni dominated areas have fallen out of government control in recent weeks and government forces are struggling to mount an effective counter-offensive. The US has launched airstrikes against IS militants in the north, where they have threatened the Kurdish city of Erbil in their advance.

There have been reports of mass killings by IS in areas populated by Yazidis, a religious sect in Iraq. The US has responded by dropping humanitarian aid to those displaced by the conflict, which now number more than one million people.
