Islamic State suicide attack: At least 17 killed in Baghdad
Two attackers shot several civilians on Monday in the Nahrawan area southeast of Baghdad before one blew himself up and the other was killed by security forces, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said, without providing official casualty figures.
The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for the attack via its Amaq news agency, saying its militants killed 35 members of the Iran-backed paramilitaries, Popular Mobilisation Units.
Local media reported at least 17 people were killed and 28 wounded. An interior ministry spokesman said “two terrorist suicide attackers” fired indiscriminately on citizens in the Nahrawan area.
Another official told Associated Press that the attack targeted a popular shopping district in the city.
Iraqi security officials say IS is likely to wage an insurgency after its self-proclaimed caliphate collapsed and its militants were dislodged from territories they held in the country.
