Israeli army admits Palestinian man's beating breached standards

Video captures Palestinian man beaten by group of Israeli soldiers in West Bank despite apparently having nothing to do with protest

Israel's military has admitted camera footage of five Israeli soldiers beating a Palestinian man in the West Bank suggested they "did not act in accordance with the standards".

The footage of the attack, released on Friday by the Israeli rights group B'Tselem, shows the Palestinian man, Ansar Aasi, carrying a box into a storage room and then standing at the door as protesters run past.

One soldier is then pictured rushing towards the 25-year-old, and pushing him into the store room. More soldiers arrive and the Palestinian man is beaten for several minutes before being dragged outside.

B'Tselem says the 6 October incident happened in the West Bank town of el-Bireh.

The Reuters news agency reported that the Israel military said initial inquiries suggested a breach of standards, but investigations were continuing.

Aasi says he wasn't involved in violence. "I raised my hand and told them I didn't do anything but they beat me everywhere," Aasi told the AP news agency.

He was eventually released five days after his arrest. B'Tselem said that only following an arrest extension hearing at the Ofer military court were police willing to view the footage.

The group said it did not know if the soldiers had been held accountable for their action.
