Israeli troops kill 15-year-old Palestinian in West Bank night raid

Israeli soldiers shot dead a 15-year-old Palestinian boy during an overnight raid in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry said on Monday.

Arkan Thaer Mizher was shot in the chest when Israeli troops raided Dheisheh refugee camp near the southern West Bank city of Bethlehem to arrest two Palestinians, Israel's army spokesperson told AFP.

Mizher's funeral is set to take place  on Monday.

A video shared on social media showed his family gathering around his body in a hospital morgue, his father biding him farewell saying: "I love you, my son."

An Israeli army spokesperson said that Israeli soldiers fired live bullets at Palestinians who threw rocks at soldiers when they raided the camp.

There were no casualties reported among the soldiers. Two other Palestinians were injured during in the raid.

Dheisheh camp is in Area A, the 18 percent of the West Bank supposedly under full Palestinian ِAuthority control. However, the Israeli army regularly carries out military raids in such areas.

The camp was set up by the UN refugee agency in 1949 to host Palestinians refugees who were forcibly expelled from 45 villages on the western slopes of Jerusalem, which Israel controlled during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. According to UNRWA, at least 15,000 Palestinians currently live in the camp.

In the Gaza Strip, another Palestinian died on Monday. Karam Arafat, 26, from the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis, succumbed to wounds sustained when he was shot by Israeli soldiers on 8 June, while participating in a Great March of Return protest.

Since 30 March, Israeli forces have reportedly killed at least 145 Palestinians and wounded another 16,500 in Gaza.
