This morning, a blast ripped through central Istanbul killing 11 people, including four civilians and seven police. But the blast was only the latest in a long line of attacks to rock Turkey since the Kurdish Workers Party started a guerrilla war against the Turkish state in 1986. Recent years have also seen a rise in other militant groups including the Islamic State and al-Qaeda that have both carried out attacks.
