Turkey elections: How to get the best news, coverage and analysis
Turkey holds presidential and general elections on 14 May. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, leader of the AKP and Turkish president since 2014, is seeking a third term as head of state. His main challenger is Kemal Kilicdaroglu, chair of the CHP and leader of a six-party opposition alliance.
Erdogan has overseen years of growth, but the Turkish economy has been hit hard of late by the fall in the lira and the impact of the war in neighbouring Ukraine. Some observers have also been critical of the government’s economic policy.
The vote comes only three months after the 6 February earthquakes killed at least 50,000 people and made an estimated six million survivors homeless across Turkey and Syria.
