Kurdish fighters have released a video showing the capture of three alleged Islamic State militants who tried to escape the siege of Manbij in Syria disguised as women.

The video, uploaded to YouTube on Thursday by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), shows the three men covered in full black veils. Eventually, they are stripped down to their pants.

According to the Storyful news verification service, one of those captured explains he was a sniper before he decided to flee the town.

The arrests came as the SDF gave IS militants 48 hours to leave Manbij, a strategic town in the east of Aleppo province.

The US-led coalition against IS has hit the town and surrounding areas in 450 air raids since the siege began in late May.

Activists say those attacks have led to dozens of civilian deaths, including at least 55 during the week of 11-18 July.

An anonymous SDF commander told AFP that the ultimatum was the "last remaining chance for besieged members of IS to leave the town".

"We took this decision now after IS used residents as human shields, after the media pressure on us, and to protect whatever civilians are left in the town.”
