Yemen's Houthis attack village in al-Bayda

Militants from the Shiite Houthi group staged Thursday an intensive strike on a village in the central al-Bayda province, a tribal source has said.

Houthi militants have fired a barrage of projectiles on Hima Sirar village in al-Bayda's flashpoint Redaa city, the source, requesting anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency.

Yemeni authorities and Houthi members could not be immediately reached for comment.

This is the second time Houthis strike the village in 48 hours, when armed tribesmen shot dead a Houthi militant.

Clashes broke out when Houthi militants sought to arrest a man they accuse of blowing up one of their vehicles in the province, the source told The Anadolu Agency.

One Houthi militant was killed and two others were injured in the violence, while no casualties were reported among the tribesmen.

Ever since they captured capital Sanaa in late September, the Houthis have been seeking to expand their control to other areas in Yemen, including al-Bayda, where they have met staunch opposition from armed tribesmen.

Houthis' growing power in Yemen has raised fears of sectarian tension in the poor Arab country, which has remained in turmoil since a popular uprising in 2011 ended the long rule of ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh one year later.
