For one lunar month each year, practising Muslims - who are able to - forgo food and drink during daylight hours and make a special effort to fill their day with prayers and good deeds.
Ramadan is not just the holiest period of the Islamic calendar, it is also a time when Muslims bond with their families for evening meals, known as iftar, to break the fast, and make time for rites and rituals, some religious and some traditional; ranging from the evening tarawi prayer to sitting around the TV to watch the latest serials.
