One police officer was killed and another was injured after attackers opened fire on a police residence in the southern Turkish province of Mersin on Monday.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was responsible for the attack, which occurred around 10.40pm (19:40 GMT) in the Mezitli district of the province.

Two attackers first shot at the police officer on duty and later detonated bombs that were attached to them, Soylu said.

A third armed suspect was detained following the attack and a search for other suspects involved in the attack was underway, the interior ministry said.
