In pictures: Protests around the Muslim world and beyond

Protests erupted throughout the globe on Friday, with many in the Arab and Muslim communities showing their support for Palestinians amid the ongoing Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

Large crowds gathered in Indonesia (pictured above); Lebanon; Egypt; Jordan; Syria; Iraq; Iran; Tunisia; Pakistan; Greece (main photo); Libya; and the US, among others.

The surge in protests was sparked by a call for international support by Palestinians on Friday. This appeal coincided with an Israeli military directive calling on Palestinians to move from the north of Gaza to the south, a directive also endorsed by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

So far, at least 1,900 people have been killed and 7,696 wounded in Gaza, which is subject to an air, land and sea blockade. Fifty Palestinians have been killed in the occupied West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem. At least 1,300 Israelis have been killed in the Hamas attacks that took place on Saturday. 

In Amman, Jordan, which has long had a peace treaty with neighbouring Israel, more than 10,000 demonstrators waved the Palestinian flag and marched the streets near the Grand Husseini Mosque in support of Palestinians amid Israeli air strikes on Gaza. 

Tensions have been escalating in Jordan in response to the call from Hamas for neighbouring tribes and military forces to unite in the battle against Israel. This comes as the death count in the confined Gaza Strip rises, with Israeli air raids persisting for a fifth consecutive night.

Demonstrators have marched to Jordan's border with Palestine, where Jordanian police fired teargas at them. Jordanians standing in solidarity with the Palestinians have accused the police of "treason" and "shameful" behaviour.

In Baghdad's Tahrir Square, protesters and supporters of influential Iraqi Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr took part in demonstrations in support of Palestine. 

"No to the occupation! No to America," chanted demonstrators after Sadr called for a protest "in support of Gaza" and against Israel.

"This rally is aimed at condemning what is happening in occupied Palestine, the bloodletting and the violation of rights," said Abu Kayan, one of the organisers of the protest.
 

Members of the Iranian Basij forces staged a mock arrest of a man dressed like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a rally to show their solidarity with Palestinians in the capital of Tehran. 

Iran financially and militarily supports Hamas and referred to the Palestinian group's Saturday attack on Israel as a "success", while insisting it had nothing to do with it. The US has stated it has found no evidence of Iranian involvement in the attack.

A boy along with supporters of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) party took part in a rally to show solidarity with Palestinians, in Pakistan's largest city, Karachi. 

Several thousand Pakistanis protested across the country after Friday prayers against Israel's massive bombardment of Gaza. 

The demonstrators raised Palestinian flags and held posters that said, "From land to the sea, Palestine will be free" and "Stand in solidarity with Palestine." They also burned Israeli flags, Dawn reported. 

In Lahore, a massive demonstration took place on Mall Road, organised by the political party Jamaat e Islami Pakistan, which saw a significant turnout of women and children. Participants waved an enormous Palestinian flag during the event. 

Speaking to the crowd, JI Emir Sirajul Haq, the leader of the party, expressed his disapproval of the US and European nations for backing Israel's actions against Palestinians. He stressed the need for Muslim nations to unite in support of the Palestinian plight, Dawn reported.

“Raising our voices for Palestinians is the responsibility of Muslims and a part of their faith,” he added.

In front of the Eid Gah mosque in Kabul, in Afghanistan, Afghan protestors take part in a demonstration after Friday prayers in support of Palestinians. 

“Palestine you are not alone, we are with you,” one speaker told the crowd, AlArabiya News reported.

“We are poor, but we will do whatever we can. We can’t do much today but use our feet and stand in your support.” 

Libyans chant slogans and wave Palestinian and Libyan national flags as they march in solidarity with the people of Palestine in Martyr's Square in the capital Tripoli.

Demonstrators also gathered in Johannesburg and criticised Washington's decision to send weapons to Israel and called for the Israeli ambassador to South Africa to be expelled.

A similar protest was held in Cape Town with people calling for an end to violence, Africa News reported.

In Lebanon, protests took place in different areas of the south, in downtown Beirut and in its southern suburbs, where thousands took part in a rally held by Hezbollah.

Near the southern coastal city of Sour, hundreds of Palestinian refugees held protests in the Palestinian refugee camp of Rashidieh.

During a pro-Palestine demonstration in Tunis, a woman holds up a scarf in the pattern of the traditional keffiyeh. 

Even those critical of the government participated in the Tunis marches, disregarding a directive that prohibited them from attending public events. Their presence underscored the growing public backing for the Palestinian issue, Al Jazeera reported.

On Wednesday, the US embassy in Tunisia said it would close to the public for routine services on Thursday and Friday in an abundance of caution, due to expected pro-Palestinian protests in the country.

Thousands of protestors demonstrated outside Istanbul University in Turkey to show solidarity with the Palestinian people. 

In the southeastern city of Diyarbakir, 46-year-old business owner Mikail Bakan said: "All the Muslim world needs to be one against Israel," Reuters reported.

In Dhaka, thousands gathered together after the Friday prayer to show their support for the Palestinian cause. 

In Yemen's Sanaa, under the control of the Houthi rebels supported by Iran and still battling a coalition led by Saudi Arabia, protesters filled the streets, brandishing both Yemeni and Palestinian flags. 

“We are ready to participate actively and send hundreds of thousands of mujahedeen ... .to defend Palestine, the Palestinian people and the holy sites,” the Houthi government said in a statement Friday.
