Morning recap
Good morning MEE readers. It is now almost 9 am in Gaza, on the third day of a temporary truce between Israel and Hamas that Palestinians are hoping turns into a cessation of war.
Late on Saturday and early on Sunday morning, the second batch of Palestinian prisoners, consisting of six women and 33 children, were released in the occupied West Bank.
The freed prisoners, who embraced their loved ones on being released, were met by massive crowds of supporters and were paraded throughout the streets. Several of the formerly imprisoned Palestinian teens described being beaten and subject to harsh treatment while under Israeli detention.
Prior to the release of one of the women prisoners, Israa Jaabis, Israeli police stormed her home and dispersed members of the media. Police said that only first-degree relatives were allowed to greet Jaabis upon her release.
After being released, Jaabis told reporters: "We must work to free all prisoners from occupation prisons."
Meanwhile, Hamas also released its second batch of captives to the International Committee of the Red Cross - 13 Israelis and 4 Thai nationals. Hamas released footage of the release, which showed the freed captives smiling and waving goodbye to the Palestinian fighters.
