France's Minister of the Armed Forces said "we" need to support the Lebanese army and the UN resolution giving them authority in southern Lebanon.

"There is no better solution at this stage than to respect (UN) Resolution 1701 and support the Lebanese Armed Forces," Sebastien Lecornu told AFP, during a visit to the Gulf.

"I have reiterated to each counterpart that we need them to support the Lebanese Armed Forces, both in the central role they play in social matters and in the security aspect."

"It will be necessary to imagine more operational support on the military ground."

The speech had been announced minutes after US envoy Amos Hochstein said there was a "real opportunity" to end the Israeli war on Lebanon.

Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem will give a speech on Tuesday, a statement from the group said, as US envoy Amos Hochstein visits Beirut seeking an end to the Israeli war on Lebanon. 

Qassem will speak "today", a statement from Hezbollah said, without specifying a time, as Hochstein told a Beirut press conference that "a real opportunity" to end the almost two-month-long war was "within our grasp".

The political office of the Palestinian Hamas movement in Doha has not been permanently closed, Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari said on Tuesday.

However, al-Ansari said leaders of the Hamas negotiating team were "not now in Doha".

Israeli forces have killed at least 50 Palestinians and wounded 110 in the last 24 hours, the Palestinian health ministry said on the 410th day of Israeli war on Gaza. 

This brings the death toll in the besieged enclave since 7 October 2023 to 43,972, with more than 104,008 wounded. At least 10,000 people are still missing, likely dead and buried under rubble.

The UN says nearly 70 percent of the victims are children and women.

More than 200 children have been killed and 1,100 wounded in Lebanon in the past two months, a spokesperson for the UN children's agency (Unicef) said on Tuesday.

"The number of over 200 (children killed) is just in the last two months. It's at least 231 since the start of the war last year," James Elder told a Geneva press briefing in response to a reporter's question about casualties.

He did not comment on who was responsible for the killings, saying that it was clear to anyone who follows the media.

Argentina has notified the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon that it is withdrawing three of its officers, a Unifil spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday.

"Correct. Argentina has asked its officers to go back," said Andrea Tenenti, Unifil spokesperson, in response to a question about a newspaper report. He declined to comment on the reason for their departure, referring the question to the Argentinian government.

An increasing number of malnutrition cases is arriving at the war-battered Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza due to the ongoing famine, the hospital's director has said.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Dr Hussam Abu Safiya said most patients are children and the elderly, who face a life-threatening shortage of medication and worsening conditions.

"Wounded patients are dying daily at the hospital due to a severe lack of doctors and medical supplies," he said.

Israeli shelling in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday have killed a Palestinian infant and a journalist, according to local media. 

The infant, who has not been named, died in artillery attacks on houses the Nuseirat refugee camp. The journalist, Ahmed Abu Sharia, died in shelling on the Sabra neighbourhood in Gaza City.

Heavy rain has flooded tents of displaced people in central and southern Gaza late on Monday, according to Palestinian reports. 

Displacement centres in the north, including those at Yarmouk Stadium in Gaza City, have also been affected. The downpour comes as weather forecasts expect low temperatures and rain to last until Wednesday.

US envoy Amos Hochstein landed in Beirut this morning, according to Lebanon's National News Agency. 

Hochstein's visit comes to continue discussions on the latest US ceasefire proposal, which Hezbollah and Lebanon have agreed to with reservation, a Lebanese official said on Monday.
