Third police officer killed in two days in southeastern Turkey
A policeman has been killed and a colleague wounded in a gun attack in Turkey’s southeastern city of Diyarbakir.
The two officers, Tansu Aydin and Ali Karahan, came under fire while investigating a road accident in the Sehitlik area on Thursday.
Two masked gunmen in their mid-twenties shot at the policemen at close range, according to a statement made by Diyarbakir governor’s office.
Aydin was shot in the head and died, while Karahan, who was shot in the foot and groin, is currently receiving treatment, the statement said.
Police are investigating the incident, which comes after the murder of two policemen in Ceylanpinar, near the Syrian border, on Wednesday, later claimed by the PKK.
The shootings followed a deadly suicide bombing in Suruc on Monday which killed at least 32 people, mainly Kurdish socialist youth activists. The PKK said the shootings were a reprisal for the Suruc bombing, which it blamed on the government.
Both the earlier shooting and the suicide attack took place in Turkey’s southeastern Sanliurfa province, near the Syrian border.
