Double bomb attacks strike Baghdad markets

Bombings in the Iraqi capital killed at least 14 people and wounded at least 55 on Thursday, security and medical officials said.

According to al-Araby al-Jadeed's Baghdad reporter, 121 people were injured, including many security officers.

The bombings struck central Baghdad's Wathba Square and near Tayran Square, in predominantly Shia neighbourhoods.

Security officers said that both attacks were carried out by bombers on foot, wearing explosives-laden vests. 

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, but bombings in the Iraqi capital are often carried out by the Islamic State group, which overran swathes of the country in June last year.

Iraqi forces backed by a US-led coalition and Iran have managed to regain significant ground north of Baghdad from IS, but much of western Iraq remains outside government control.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq says a total of 1,325 Iraqis were killed and another 1,811 wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in August.
