South London: Attacker reportedly cries 'I want to kill a Muslim' after stabbing

The incident comes amid heightened fears about the rise of anti-Muslim sentiment in the UK

A man reportedly stabbed a passenger on a train in south London on Monday, before shouting "I want to kill a Muslim" and chasing other passengers.

According to onlookers, one man was stabbed on a train at Forest Hill station while sitting next to his wife - the attacker then ran outside the station shouting: "Who is a Muslim? I want to kill a Muslim".

Shoppers and passengers fled the scene as the man continued to roam the streets for around 15 minutes.

"The man came running out of the station with a knife, and everybody started running and screaming," eyewitness Emma Pinder told Mirror Online.

"The looks on some people's faces, they were terrified and very scared."

Another witness told the Mirror the attacker was screaming "some mad sh*t".

The man was later arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm following what the British Transport Police called a "serious incident".

Many in the UK have expressed concern over the rise of anti-Muslim sentiment in the UK, particularly following the referendum to leave the EU, which many argued was motivated by anti-migrant sentiment.

Last month Thomas Mair, a far-right activist driven in part by anti-Muslim beliefs, was found guilty of murdering Labour MP Jo Cox.

The incident raised further concerns about the rise of racist ideologies in the UK.
