ZainaErhaim
Zaina Erhaim is a Syrian journalist whose reporting from her home country has provided a unique account of the effect of conflict on civilian population and of women’s resistance. Born in Idlib and educated in Damascus, Erhaim was finishing a master degree in international journalism in London just as unrest began in Syria in 2011. She spent a year as a broadcast journalist with the BBC Arabic Service before returning to northern Syria. She has corresponded for publications such as Orient TV, Al Hayat newspaper and Syria News. She is also the Syria project coordinator for the Institute for War and Peace Reporting in which capacity she has trained some 100 citizen-journalists (a third of whom are women). She is thus responsible, directly or indirectly, for much of the eyewitness journalistic accounts of the Syrian civil war. She is also the director of the documentary series, Syria’s Rebellious Women. Erhaim was named journalist of 2015 by Reporters without Borders (The Peter Mackler Award for Courageous and Ethical Journalism) and more recently was awarded the 2016 Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression Award for journalism.
