ICJ hearing: Why South Africa is accusing Israel of genocide

In an unprecedented first, South Africa is taking Israel to the International Court of Justice for violating the Genocide Convention in its unrelenting bombardment and siege of Gaza since 7 October 2023. This is the first time Israel - a nation state built as a sanctuary for Jews who have historically faced antisemitism, pogroms, and genocide - will take the stand to defend itself against accusations of genocide.
