Lebanese protest against Central Bank as currency drops to new low

Lebanese protesters blocked roads and burned tires near the central bank in Beirut and chanted slogans against central bank governor Riad Salameh, as the weakened local currency plummeted to a new low against the dollar.

Lebanon's economic crisis, which began in 2019, has cost the lira around 97 percent of its value. The decline has been particularly steep this week, plunging to nearly 56,000 Lebanese lira per dollar.

The economic crisis has been dubbed by the World Bank as one of the worst in recent global history.
