DERAA, Syria - Ramadan is usually a quiet time to spend time with family and friends. In Syria's southern capital of Deraa, however, the month has brought more hardship and suffering as the bloody civil war continues to grind on.
There have been bread and food shortages, and fighting has continued. The first part of the holy month of Ramadan saw a number of large battles between the Southern Front rebel alliance and government troops. While the opposition made some initial advances, this has since stalled with the government still holding out in pockets and bombing continuing.
As the month comes to a close, and Deraa residents get ready to celebrate Eid, they do so with heavy hearts fearing that the war will drag on for months and maybe even years to come.
