Thousands of Yazidis trapped in the Sinjar mountains as they tried to escape from Islamic State (IS) forces, were rescued by Kurdish Peshmerga forces and People’s Protection Unit (YPG) on Saturday.
The plight of the Yazidis, targeted by IS as "devil-worshippers", provoked a strong response by US President Barack Obama, who promised airstrikes in anticipation of a potential "genocide" scenario.
