Jordan's King Abdullah issued a decree on Sunday announcing parliament is to be dissolved in his kingdom, according to the official Petra news agency.
Jordan's constitution stipulates that the current government must now resign within a week.
Abdullah has appointed the veteran politician Hani Mulqi as prime minister and has put him in charge with overseeing elections before the end of the year, an unnamed senior political source told the Reuters news agency.
Parliament had ended its four year term, and new elections should take place within four months as per the country's constitution.
