In Photos: An assassination attempt in Jerusalem
Growing tensions in Jerusalem came to a deadly head on Wednesday night, with the assassination attempt of right-wing Israeli activist Yehuda Glick and then the subsequent deadly shooting of 32-year-old Palestinian Mu’taz al-Hijazi in the Abu Tor neighbourhood.
Glick, who is known for his lobbying to secure Jewish prayer rights at the al-Aqsa mosque compound, was leaving a conference at Menachem Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem when he was shot at least three times in the chest at close range. Israeli police secured the centre and surrounding park as officers interrogated eye witnesses and searched for evidence of the alleged shooter.
In Abu Tor, a mostly Palestinian neighbourhood of Jerusalem which is a short five-minute drive from the Glick shooting, neighbours reported gunshots around 5:30am on Thursday. Helicopters and police sirens could be heard as police forces raided the home of the Hijazi family. Gun fire was exchanged between the police forces and the suspect, Mu’taz Hijazi, before he was killed reportedly attempting to flee the scene.
