Nurse in Aleppo reportedly publishes suicide note after rape fears
A Syrian nurse in Aleppo has reportedly published a letter stating her intention to commit suicide in order to avoid rape, saying she does not care about the condemnation this may bring from those who say suicide is prohibited in Islam.
The woman, who is not named, writes: "I am committing suicide for no reason other than not wanting several members of the Assad regime to savour raping me, while just yesterday they were afraid to say the word 'Aleppo'".
The letter begins by addressing Muslim scholars and leaders of the opposition, and goes on to explain why she has taken the decision, despite the prohibition of suicide within the Islamic tradition.
‘’I am committing suicide..and I don't care if you say I am in hellfire!"
‘I will conclude by saying that your fatwas (verdicts) have become meaningless to me, so save it for yourself and your family..’
Middle East Eye has been unable to verify the letter.
It was published on Jaboubia, a Shia Lebanese website, which wrote that the nurse committed suicide after she witnessed two other colleagues being raped in front of her.
