New video has emerged claiming to show the almost complete destruction of a 2,000-year-old monument in the iconic Syrian town of Palmyra.

The unverified footage, which was shot by activists and emerged on Wednesday, claims to prove that Islamic State militants blew up up the Arch of Triumph, a monument dating back to the Roman Empire, on Monday.

Islamic State advanced towards the ancient city, and its modern sister town Tadmor, in May of this year.

As well as destroying priceless items of Syria’s historical heritage, IS militants have committed various atrocities in the town, including beheading and stringing up a much-loved 82-year-old antiquities professor for “representing Syria at heretical conferences”.
