On the evening of 15 July, a faction within Turkey's armed forces launched an attempted coup to unseat the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
With tanks blocking key bridges in Istanbul and fighter jets flying around the capital Ankara, Erdogan appeared via iPhone on a national television channel urging Turks to resist what would have been the country's fifth military coup in less than 60 years.
Huge numbers of people poured onto the streets and the coup was stopped in its tracks. Since then, the government has crackdown, arresting thousands of police and army officers arrested and dismissing nearly 3,000 judges.
