Iraqi forces raised the national flag over the main government compound in Fallujah on Friday, top commanders said, a breakthrough in the nearly four-week-old offensive against the Islamic State (IS) group's bastion.
The elite federal forces met limited resistance from IS militants, who were redeploying on the western outskirts of the city, the commanders told the AFP news agency.
Bodies of dozens of dead IS militants were left to rot under blankets amid the rubble of homes destroyed by air strikes and rockets.
Raed Shaker Jawdat, Iraq's federal police chief, said the liberation of the government compound, "symbolises the restoration of the state's authority".
