Palestinian shot dead by Israeli settler in West Bank after 'attempted stabbing'
A Palestinian official has called for an inquiry after a Palestinian man was shot dead by an Israeli settler at the Huwara checkpoint near the West Bank city of Nablus.
The Israeli army said the man had been shot on Wednesday after he tried to carry out a stabbing attack but a Palestinian security source said initial information that he had indicated the dead man had been trying to cross the road.
The civilian who shot the attacker has been identified as Joshua Sherman, a resident of the illegal West Bank settlement of Elon Moreh and an activist on behalf of the Union of the Right-Wing Parties, Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported.
Palestinian official news agency Wafa quoted witnesses as saying the Palestinian man was a truck driver.
Ghassan Daghlas, a Palestinian official in the Nablus governorate, demanded an investigation into the shooting.
"The whole place and street are full of security cameras. The cameras must have filmed everything," he said.
'Tried to open the car door'
Sherman told Israel Radio that he was driving slowly through the intersection with his daughter when a Palestinian charged at their car.
"I was driving to work and heading toward the Tapuh junction. At the intersection, a terrorist with a knife jumped my car and tried to open the car door," said Sherman.
"I stepped out of the car, and while the terrorist tried to get past me I shot and neutralized him with the assistance of another man who was driving in the car behind me."
The Palestinian man later died of his wounds.
The Palestinian health ministry later confirmed the death and said that another Palestinian was wounded in the fire exchange and is in a moderate condition.
Asked if it knew of another casualty in the incident, the Israeli military said it had nothing to add to its statement.
