A Palestinian teenager was killed by Israeli forces near the West Bank city of Nablus on Monday.

The shooting happened at the Tappuah checkpoint, south of Nablus in the northern West Bank, after a group of Palestinian youths allegedly began throwing stones. However, there are differing accounts with Palestinian security officials saying that the youths began throwing stones at Israeli military vehicles, while some Israeli media has reported that the youths were taking aim at Israeli settlers.

Palestinian Ma’an agency identified the victim as Imam Jamil Dweikat, 17. It also said that another Palestinian teenager, 19-year-old Nael Thiab, had been injured in the incident.

An Israeli military spokesperson said that the soldiers fired warning shots, but then fired at the youths when they did not comply. The military’s criminal investigation unit is launching an investigation into the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, Israeli forces sealed off the area and barred ambulances from reaching it, Anadolu Agency reported.

Dweikat is the 50th Palestinian to be killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank this year while around 20 Palestinians have been killed by the army in the West Bank since June, according to an AFP tally.

The shooting comes less than a month after Israeli troops killed a Palestinian during a clash at the Qalandiyah refugee camp. According to the army, the man hurled a bomb at the soldiers.
