The Free Syrian Army was originally the main rebel group fighting against forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. Now, since the rise of Islamic State and the splintering of the opposition into hundreds of different factions, the FSA is facing ever-increasing difficulties as Syria's civil war enters its fourth year.
MEE travelled to the countryside just north of Aleppo, where FSA fighters have been fighting pitched battles against Islamic State for months, attempting to prevent the militants from advancing into two majority Shiite towns where President Assad has traditionally had a strong support base.
