Israeli soldiers crossed into Syria on Monday, opening fire on four people suspected of throwing objects into Israel, according to local news reports.

Israeli military officials told the Haaretz newspaper they believe that the objects thrown were explosive devices.

After being shot, one of the four individuals was flown to Poriya Hospital in northern Israel by helicopter, an Israeli army spokesperson said. The three other people escaped.

The Israeli army said its soldiers had opened fire on the unidentified people, which it described as standard protocol.

According to the hospital, the wounded man was shot in the stomach and is undergoing surgery, Haaretz said.

Poriya's emergency room director Dr Eran Tal-Or said the man's condition was considered serious and unstable.
