For a country just over half a century old, Qatar has had an eventful history and one of its most dramatic episodes yet - the hosting of the football World Cup - is yet to begin.

The Gulf peninsula sits off the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia and is small enough that you can travel from one end to the other in a little under two hours.

Gas fields and a prolific sovereign wealth fund have brought the country immense wealth, transforming a once remote desert-covered Ottoman outpost into one of the richest countries in the world, strewn with flashy skyscrapers, luxury malls, and extravagant hotels.

But Qataris will insist there is more to their country than lavish displays of wealth, including a Bedouin culture that has existed in the region for hundreds of years.
