It's early morning, and Zelda Montes walks briskly through the crisp New York air as they head to Google's headquarters on Manhattan’s 9th Avenue.

Montes, who self-identifies as they, fumbles with their ID card at the entrance, blending in with the steady stream of Googlers swiping through the security barriers as if it were just another day at the office.

Armed with an oversized tote bag, Montes pulls back their purple hair and heads to the 13th-floor canteen to order their usual: a dirty chai and an egg, avocado, and cheese sandwich with a bowl of raspberries. Their hands tremble slightly as they grip the coffee cup.

Locking eyes with two others, they get the signal that the coast is clear, head down to the entrance, and sit.

The three Googlers unfurl their banners and begin chanting to demand that Google do one thing: Drop Project Nimbus.

An Israeli air strike targeted a residential building in the Mezzah suburb, located west of the Syrian capital Damascus, according to Syria’s state news agency.

Initial reports suggest the strike caused injuries among civilians.

Earlier, local media reported that Syria’s air defences had intercepted "hostile" targets near Damascus.

UN secretary general Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over escalating Israeli attacks on Lebanon, warning that the situation threatens the entire region. He noted that the death toll in Lebanon has already surpassed that of the 2006 Israeli war.

"Attacks, including on civilians, are threatening the entire region. Large-scale Israeli strikes deep into Lebanon, including Beirut, have killed more than 2,000 people over the last year, with 1,500 of those deaths occurring in just the past two weeks," Guterres said.

According to Lebanese authorities, over one million people have been displaced, and 300,000 have fled to Syria.

Guterres emphasised that the conflict is "getting worse by the hour", with the UN’s warnings about the consequences of escalation being realised. "Every air strike, every missile launch, every rocket fired pushes peace further out of reach and worsens the suffering of millions of civilians caught in the middle," he said.

He reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire in both Gaza and Lebanon, the unconditional release of hostages, and urgent humanitarian aid for those in need. Guterres also renewed his call for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, saying, "All people in the region deserve to live in peace."

UN secretary general Antonio Guterres condemned the killing of journalists and aid workers in Gaza and revealed that he had written to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to express his "profound concern" over proposed legislation that could block Unrwa's work in the region.

"The vast majority of those killed were part of the backbone of humanitarian relief operations in Gaza – Unrwa," Guterres stated. "In the midst of all the upheaval, Unrwa – more than ever – is indispensable. Unrwa – more than ever – is irreplaceable."

Guterres also "strongly condemned" violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza and reiterated his call for the release of captives held by Hamas.

"International law is unambiguous: civilians everywhere must be respected and protected, and their essential needs must be met, including through humanitarian assistance," he said. "No place is safe in Gaza, and no one is safe."

He warned that implementing the proposed legislation would likely "deal a terrible blow" to Gaza’s humanitarian response.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) faces an unprecedented moment in its history, one that could shape its legacy and impact the lives of thousands.

Prosecutor Karim Khan and his team have risen to their mandate, applying for arrest warrants in the face of enormous risk and pressure.

Yet the ICC as a whole is faltering. The delay in the judges' decision-making is a catastrophic failure to uphold the court's own mission.

The judges' task at this stage is straightforward: consider the application for arrest warrants.

In the grand scheme of what lies ahead, it is a relatively small, yet urgent, step. However, this protracted delay is neither necessary nor reasonable.

In September, at least 1,473 people died in Lebanon due to intensified Israeli attacks, according to updated figures from the Lebanese health ministry.

By 8 October 2024, the death toll had risen to 2,083, including 127 children and 261 women, while 9,869 people had been wounded. These casualties are the result of a year of cross-border exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah.

CBS News executives told employees that an interview with author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates, where he was accused by a programme host of "extremist" views in his writing about Palestinians, did not meet the network's editorial standards, according to several reports.

“We all must conduct ourselves in a way that avoids raising any questions about our journalistic independence and integrity,” Adrienne Roark, head of newsgathering for CBS News and stations, told staff on Monday.

“We are here to report news without fear or favour. There are times we fail our audiences and each other. We’re in one of those times right now, and it’s been growing. And we’re at a tipping point," she continued.

Last month, CBS Mornings co-host Tony Dokoupil faced heavy backlash from social media users who accused him of unprofessionalism and bias for his 30 September interview with Coates about his latest book, The Message, a collection of essays about the author's experiences in Senegal, the American South and Palestine.

Dokoupil said that the section of the book on Israel and Palestine - where the author describes his observations about conditions in the occupied West Bank, which he calls a system of apartheid - "would not be out of place in the backpack of an extremist".

CNN reported that US President Joe Biden expressed growing frustration with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as revealed in a new book by veteran journalist Bob Woodward.

According to the book, earlier this year Biden referred to Netanyahu privately, saying, "That son of a bitch, Bibi Netanyahu, he's a bad guy. He's a bad fucking guy!"

During an April phone call, Biden asked Netanyahu, "What's your strategy, man?" Netanyahu responded, "We have to go into Rafah." Biden, unimpressed, replied, "Bibi, you've got no strategy."

In private discussions with his advisors, Biden voiced concern about Netanyahu's actions: "I know he's going to do something, but the way I limit it is tell him to 'do nothing.'"

After Israel moved into Rafah, Biden reportedly said, "He's a fucking liar." By July, his irritation had reached new heights when an Israeli air strike killed a top Hezbollah commander and three civilians in Beirut. "Bibi, what the fuck?" Biden allegedly yelled.

Biden also confronted Netanyahu, saying, "The perception of Israel around the world increasingly is that you're a rogue state, a rogue actor."

Netanyahu defended the strike, saying the target was "one of the leading terrorists", and added, "The harder you hit, the more successful you're going to be in the negotiation."

Hezbollah said on Tuesday that its forces prevented the Israeli army from advancing towards the border area of Labouneh in southern Lebanon.

"As an enemy Zionist force advanced at 2:00 AM on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, towards the border area of Labouneh, supported by bulldozers and vehicles, our fighters rained artillery and rocket fire on them, causing confirmed casualties and forcing them to retreat," the group said in a statement reported by al-Mayadeen channel.

It also reported "direct confrontation between the resistance and a special Israeli force that infiltrated from behind a Unifil position in Labouneh", referring to the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon.

Satellite images on Tuesday showed 40 Israeli military vehicles near Unifil's base in Maroun al-Ras, southern Lebanon.

Unifil rejected the Israeli army deployment as an acceptable compromise for the safety of the blue helmets.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant claimed on Tuesday that the successor of assasinated Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has been killed.

It's been widely believed that Hashem Safieddine, a senior Hezbollah official, would be Nasrallah's successor.

"Hezbollah is an organisation without a head. Nasrallah was eliminated, his replacement was probably also eliminated," Gallant said during a briefing at the Israeli military's northern command centre, as reported by Reuters. He didn't name the replacement.

"There's no one to make decisions, no one to act," he said.

Hezbollah's deputy secretary general Naim Qassem on Tuesday said his group is due to elect a new chief and would announce it when it happens.

US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham on Tuesday called for the normalisation of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel by the end of 2024, which he said could muster enough Senate votes to endorse a defence treaty with Riyadh to support the decision.

"We can get you a treaty through the Senate between the United States and Saudi Arabia, a defence agreement like you have in Japan and Australia, if you do it on President Biden's watch," Graham told reporters in Jerusalem.

"The next president will have a very difficult time getting 67 votes," he said, referring to the two-thirds majority needed in the US Senate for approving a defence treaty.

James Elder, the spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, warned on Tuesday that the war on Lebanon is being conducted in the same way as the devastating war on Gaza.

“The commonalities are unfortunately absolutely there to be seen, whether it is displacement on the ground, impact upon children or language being used … [to] soften the realities on the ground,” he said in Beirut during an online press briefing with reporters.
