Man in viral video who stopped fight credits Muslim values
A US man who gained internet fame and widespread praise for stopping a fight between two teenagers in Atlantic City, New Jersey, said his Muslim faith taught him to pursue peace.
“I’m a Muslim. I was raised by Muslim parents. That’s what we were taught in my house, always, growing up,” Ibn Ali Miller told Time magazine. “For me, I don’t look at it like I’m a peacemaker. I did what I was supposed to do, what I was raised to do.”
Miller was lauded for scolding students who were fist-fighting in the street. His conversation with the teenagers was captured in a video that has been viewed millions of times.
"Everybody on their phones, you all [are] the real cowards. Record that, too," Miller told the crowd surrounding the two battling teens. "It ain't cool, man. You all [are] in the middle of the street."
He then proceeded to address the boys who were fighting.
“Don’t make your parents look like this,” Miller told the students firmly in the video that was published on Monday.
The two teenagers who had been exchanging punches ended up shaking hands after listening to Miller.
Basketball champion LeBron James, among other celebrities, hailed Miller’s intervention.
Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian urged other adults to follow Miller's example.
"A dozen positive lessons could be taught from that four-minute video alone," he said in a statement. "He fearlessly spoke so much truth to those young kids. We need more adults in the world that are willing to step in to help pull back our youth from the edge."
Miller, a self-employed contractor and a father of six, said he did not sense danger from the fighting teenagers.
“I stepped in just because it was the right thing to do,” he told Time. “Those kids didn’t look like predators to me. To me, I saw my own kids. I didn’t see predators.”
