In pictures: Stolen hours at the seaport

During Friday's brief humanitarian lull, fishermen in Gaza ventured out in search of a haul to keep them going

Gaza’s fishermen took advantage of a rare opportunity during Friday’s ceasefire to launch their boats in search of fish. As Palestinian leaders were gearing up to travel to Cairo and demand, among other things, 12 miles’ freedom of movement in Gaza’s waters, these fishermen stole a few hours of fishing time.

Since a November 2012 ceasefire, Palestinians have been allowed to venture six miles offshore. During the most recent bombardment, though, the livelihood of many fishermen has been curtailed, with sailors sneaking out just 20 metres from the shore in canoes during hostilities in hopes of a catch. In the few moments of calm, like this one, they dare to go further, starting up the engines of their motor boats to go in search of fish.
