Sudan coup: The names and faces of the protesters killed

In little over a month, security forces have killed 42 people protesting against Sudan’s military coup

On 25 October, Sudan's top general, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, declared a state of emergency in the country, ousting the government and detaining the country’s civilian leadership, including Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.

The military takeover, which upended a two-year transition to civilian rule, was widely denounced by critics as a coup, and sparked a nationwide protest movement that has been violently repressed by armed forces.

One month later, the independent Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD) has tallied the names of 42 protesters who have been killed between 21 October - one of the first protests against the army’s already clear ambitions to claim power - and Thursday 25 November.

In a series of ongoing “march of millions” protests, hundreds of thousands of Sudanese have taken to the streets over the past month to call for civilian rule in a country with a long history of military coups. Sudan has enjoyed rare interludes of democratic rule since independence in 1956.

Police officials have denied using any live ammunition against demonstrators, but CCSD reporting, as well as footage emerging from Sudan despite heavy internet blackouts, contradicts the claim that the armed forces have used "minimum force" to disperse the protests.

The violent repression reached its peak on 17 November, when 16 protesters were fatally shot, prompting widespread condemnation.

“The ruthless killing of 16 people on 17 November, many shot in the head, shows clearly that Sudan’s security forces had no intention of exercising restraint, but are bent on silencing Sudanese voices,” Human Rights Watch’s Horn of Africa director Laetitia Bader said in a statement on Tuesday

“Sudan’s backers should not, in the name of political expediency, let these crimes go unanswered nor those responsible get away with them.”

Using data provided by CCSD and photographs from Sudanese activists, Middle East Eye has compiled a list of the 42 demonstrators confirmed to have been killed in a month of upheaval in Sudan. Along with the hundreds of wounded civilians, the slain protesters - aged 13 to 70 - are a stark reminder of the coup’s deadly consequences.

Despite police claims, every confirmed death came after the protester was shot by live ammunition, with the majority of victims - just under six in 10 people - having been shot in the head or neck.

The killed protesters were overwhelmingly young, with over three-quarters of them under the age of 30, including five minors.

The youngest victim was a 13-year-old girl, identified as Ramaaz Hatem al-Atta, while the oldest was 70-year-old Awad al-Karim Abdul Majid. Both were shot in the head.

Hamdok was reinstated as premier on Sunday under a heavily contested agreement signed with Burhan, the man who put him under house arrest just weeks before. But Sudanese demonstrators remain determined to stay in the streets and push for democracy.

Another protest is planned this Thursday.
