A Palestinian was killed by Israeli fire as he protested on the frontier of the Gaza Strip and Israel on Friday, according to Gaza's health ministry

The ministry identified the name of the Palestinian killed as Tamer Arafat, aged 23, from Rafah in the coastal enclave's south.

According to the ministry, at least 41 other Palestinians were also wounded by Israeli sniper fire during renewed protests along the frontier.

A statement from the ministry's spokesman said 42 people, including Arafat, "were shot by Israeli occupation forces" during the 50th week of demonstrations dubbed 'the Great March of Return'.

Four medics were among those wounded, the ministry said.

Protests and clashes began along the Gaza frontier on 30 March last year.

Demonstrators have been calling for Palestinian refugees to be allowed to return to their former homes now inside Israel that they and their families were expelled from in 1948.

At least 252 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since March 2018, the majority shot during weekly border protests and others hit by tank fire or air strikes in response to violence from Gaza.

Two Israeli soldiers have been killed over the same period.
