In 1947 French troops opened fire on Moroccan civilians in Casablanca, killing between 160 and 1000 people between 7 and 8 April. The massacre was an attempt by France to sabotage the Moroccan sultan's journey to Tangier, where he would give an iconic speech to call for his country’s independence
