Who was Ismail Haniyeh?

On 31 July, Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in the Iranian capital Tehran. Though not yet confirmed, it is widely speculated that Haniyeh was killed by an Israeli air strike.

Born in a Gaza refugee camp, the former prime minister played a central role in the growth of Hamas and in Palestinian politics from a young age.
