As the cradle of civilisation and the home of some of the world's greatest empires, the Middle East was the venue for some of the most dramatic moments in history.

Palace intrigues, fratricidal conflicts and wars between rival powers have helped inspire literature and cinema millennia after the events took place.

Today the names of Cleopatra, Cyrus the Great, Hannibal and Biblical figures, such as King David and Solomon, are widely known, as are the legends and stories associated with them.

So too are the names and relics of once great civilisations, such as the Nabataeans who lived in the Levant and Hijaz, and the Phoenicians, who played a pivotal role in the formation of writing and trade.
