The year 2023 comes to an end with millions across the region uncertain about their futures and facing the threat of immediate death and expulsion from their homelands.

In Gaza, Israel has killed more than 21,000 people, the overwhelming majority of them women and children, as it embarks on a campaign with the apparent aim of making the besieged territory unliveable for Palestinians.

In the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, Israeli settlers, backed by their government, are using the war as an opportunity to terrorise Palestinians by seizing their land and property and subjecting them to deadly violence.

The war threatens to spill over into Lebanon, as Hezbollah and Israel remain stuck in a standoff, which could draw other regional powers, such as Iran, into conflict.

In Yemen, where the Houthi movement has effectively shut off shipping routes into the Red Sea to protest against Israel's assault on Gaza, the US has deployed a naval armada, which could see it enter open combat.

Separately in Sudan, the war between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese army continues to rage, causing mass casualties among civilians.

Given the severity of these crises, it's easy for many of the other events that defined the Middle East and North Africa this year to slide under the radar.

To that end, Middle East Eye tests your memory of 2023 in our end of year quiz.
